Zusammenspiel · Team guidance

People don't simply function together.

A team holds when everyone in it is accepted as they are. And when you know what each of you needs. That doesn't happen by itself.

A team is a family you didn't choose.

You spend more time with these people than with your own family. Whether you founded something together, work in the same department or share your evenings as volunteers: everyone brings themselves along. Their way of thinking, their strengths, their weaknesses.

As in a relationship, it's not enough for everyone to like each other. It's about how your types fit together and what each person needs to work well.

When everyone is allowed to work the way they're built, things get calm.

What keeps you at work is your team.

When the team works, it hardly matters how the company is doing. And yet there's endless coaching for managers. For the people who work together every day, there's an away day once a year at most. And on Monday everything is back to how it was.

A team day explains. Then it's Monday. I stay until you do it differently.

That's why I work with teams. Not just with the people who lead them.

How I work

I look closely.
At each person individually.

First I talk to every person in your team on their own. How do they think, how do they decide, what gives them energy and what drains it?

Pattern, for me, means: how someone thinks, decides, and what drains them, long before it shows in a meeting.

Then we look together at what lies in between. One needs quiet before deciding, the other thinks out loud. As long as things run smoothly, that's called complementing each other. When it gets tight, it's called conflict. Yet it's the same thing.

Friction is usually a pattern. And nobody needs to feel guilty about a pattern.

When teams come to me.

You're new together.

And want to know from the start how to work well together.

Things are going well.

And you want it to stay that way, even when things get tight.

Someone joins or leaves.

And the team has to find its shape again.

Always the same argument.

Whatever it is about, you end up in the same place.

What you tell me stays with you.

Whoever books the guidance doesn't receive individual profiles. Everyone decides for themselves what they bring into the team. Nobody hears from me how they should be, and none of it is ever used to decide who stays or goes.

Only those who feel safe show themselves.

Why I do this

Eight people
who could do everything.

Only the how didn't work.

In my last permanent job, I was part of a team of eight top experts. Together we built the reporting system for the group's executive board. Professionally, everything fitted.

For us as a team there was no support. There were arguments, mediations and a team-building weekend where we were mostly told how we were supposed to be. That's what broke the team.

Nobody asked how we fit together. That's exactly what I ask today.

I know teams from the inside, as a member and as the one leading: agile and in line management at Deutsche Bahn, Germany's national railway, at the head of a large NGO in my early twenties, and as a disaster-response officer with the German Red Cross. Today I'm a profiler, and I often see a person's pattern before they see it themselves.

Not for every team. For yours?

For you if

  • you value each other and still keep getting stuck in the same places
  • you're good and want it to stay that way
  • everyone is willing to look at themselves, not just at the others

Not for you if

  • someone is supposed to decide who's right or who goes
  • only you want it and the others are supposed to go along
  • it's really about strategy, numbers or the product
The spark has to be there already. In a team, that means: everyone wants it. Not just you.

How it works

Intro call

30 minutes, free, on Zoom. You decide who joins: one person, a few of you or the whole team.

The one-to-one talks

Everyone talks to me individually, in confidence, and sees their own pattern.

The team picture

Together: who carries what, who needs what, where it rubs and why. You leave with a few clear agreements.

The guidance

You try out the agreements in everyday work, and we fine-tune until it holds. At the end, we look back together.

Whether it fits, we'll know
in 30 minutes.

You tell me where you are. I tell you honestly what I see and whether I'm the right person for it. Then you decide. In your own time.
